“HUMAN” is a piece inspired by the homeless community located in The Bay Area. Prior to moving to the West Coast, I had never witnessed homelessness in the way that I had while living in The Bay. The purpose of this piece is to give a voice to a community that is pushed aside, unheard, and ignored on a daily basis. The word “Change” is an entity that drives the piece in order for us to take a look at ourselves and how we think of change whether it be monetary change, physical change, change of mental and spiritual states. Many times I’ve encountered a homeless person asking for change, and unfortunately, there are times when I don’t have enough to offer, but I’ve been learning that sometimes a smile, a prayer, or just acknowledging that they too are human can also be enough. This piece helps me realize that in order to initiate change on a larger scale I have to begin with myself in order to help make change happen within our society.
